Table of emoticons and their difference from emoji
Smileys (also known as emoticons) and emoji have been developing in parallel with each other for a long time. The first came to us from the west, and the second from the east. Now many people no longer make a distinction between these two “graphic languages,” but VKontakte recognizes the language of emoji and the language of emoticons.
And if to obtain Japanese graphics you need to use a special code, then you can “draw” a smiley yourself using typographic symbols - VK recognizes it and converts it into an image.
All emoji codes have already been collected in a separate article (the link to it will be just below), and you can see the typographical spelling of the emoticons that VKontakte recognizes in the table below. All the presented emoticons are in the tooltip, but knowing what parts a particular emoticon consists of, you can quickly type it and avoid long searches. You will also be able to depict an emoticon in such a way that VK does not convert it into graphics and you still have typographical characters in your status.

Wink | |
xD | Laughter |
;-P | Winking with tongue |
:-p | Tasty |
Loving look | |
B-) | In sunglasses |

;-] | Smirk |
3( | thoughtfulness |
:'( | I'm crying |
:_( | Tears flow like a river |

<3 | Love (heart) |
:-* | Kiss with closed eyes |
>( | I'm angry |

If you remove the “nose” from the “:-)” emoticon, then VK will not recognize it and you will have a smile like this “:)” in your status.

All emoji codes for VKontakte: from emoticons to Japanese ideograms
Hello, dear blog readers! I think I won't be lying if I say...
Hidden Emoji
Before talking directly about the process of adding faces, it is worth mentioning that VKontakte supports many more emoji than are presented in the tooltip.
In the context of the VK social network, a tooltip is a pop-up window in which you select an emoticon while writing a message, post or comment.
In order to use emojis hidden from ordinary social network users, you need to know their codes. They are collected in a separate article. All emoji are divided into thematic collections and structured in the form of convenient tables with a code, image and its meaning, so you can easily find the emoticon you need.
What is the emoji in the name on VKontakte in 2021?
With the spread of the coronavirus and the introduction of large-scale quarantine measures, the social network VK decided to introduce a number of visual statuses about self-isolation into its functionality. Such statuses would allow people to tell what they are doing during self-isolation, and also make it easier for the administration of the VK network to maintain such statistics.
VKontakte has introduced a number of status emoticons into its functionality from April 1, 2021
This innovation was launched on April 1, 2021, and initially included the following types of emoticons:
- I'm seating at home;
- I'm sick;
- Sometimes I go out;
- I ignore the pandemic;
- I go to work;
- I'm buying paper. The first six Covid emoticons available for selection and placed next to the name in VK
Then the following statuses were added to VK, which can be put in the name:
- Walking the dog;
- I work from home;
- Petting the cat;
- Saving lives;
- By the refrigerator;
- I analyze statistics;
- Trying to get home;
- On the balcony;
- I defeat the Pechenegs;
- I build conspiracy theories. Additional status emoticons that appeared on VK in mid-April
There are now a total of 17 statuses available, each of which, when selected, will be displayed as an emoji emoticon to the right of the user name.
Statuses are available in the form of emoticons next to the username in VK
If you point the arrow at such an emoji in VK, a link to the application (page) will be displayed, with which you can install this emoji for yourself. And also a footnote to background information about Covid-19.
When you hover the cursor over the link, an emoticon with reference information in VK will be displayed
At the same time, the specified set of emoticons may not be final, and may be replenished with new and interesting alternatives.
How to put an emoticon in the status of a group or personal page
Along with the recent update of the social network, a tooltip appeared in the “Status” column in which you can select an emoji. You can choose from the same graphics as in the dialog tooltip. Now users have two ways to add an emoticon to the status of a personal page or community.
Selection in tooltip
This option is extremely simple, because all actions are performed through the VKontakte interface. You need to get into the edit field. To do this, click on your status (if any) or on the “change status” inscription. By clicking on the icon in the form of a smiling face, open the tooltip and select the appropriate emoji.
Emoji will appear at the location where the cursor is placed.
Personally, I see several disadvantages in this method:
- It’s inconvenient to search for the right emoticon,
- small icons are hard to see,
- many emoji are simply not in the standard set.
Inserting code
If you decide to go the other way and use non-standard emoji, then you need to open the article with emoticon codes (the link to it is just above) and find a suitable face. For convenience, you can use a quick search on the page - press the key combination Ctrl + F and enter the name of the emotion or item.
Once you have made your selection, copy the emoji code found in the middle column, paste it into the status edit line and click the “Save” button.
It often happens that when using a code, a set of characters and numbers is displayed instead of an image. This problem can be resolved by simply refreshing the page.
VKontakte Stickers
To diversify your correspondence, in addition to emoticons, you can use stickers. They are presented to the user as pictures, funny faces, animals. Found in the menu with emoticons. However, this service is paid; only the fruit section is available for free. The user decides how to make the payment independently (by bank card, WebMoney). There are pictures here that highlight almost any emotion.
But there is also a free way to access VKontakte stickers - the “EmojiPlus” extension for Google Chrome. You can download it from the official store https://chrome.google.com/webstore/…
Click Install, update the browser F5 and use the new set of emoji.
Where else can you add emoji?
Emoji can be used not only in status, but also in many other sections of the community and personal page. Recently, VK has become more and more free in terms of using emoticons.
While preparing the article, I was able to put emoticons even in the “Grandchildren” and “Children” columns. Emoji cannot be inserted only into the full name, community name and video title. In the remaining sections you are free to conduct your own experiments.
VKontakte recognizes emoji:
- in status on the wall;
- in comments;
- in posts, attached articles and notes;
- in the description of the photo;
- in the name and description of the goods;
- in surveys;
- in personal information;
- in the community description;
- in the video description;
- in the title of the song, its lyrics and the name of the artist.
It is worth considering that the method using a tooltip does not work in all cases, but the option with codes is universal.
To messages
Every day we write VKontakte messages to our friends, congratulate them on holidays or share the latest news. Emoticons will help convey emotions. They can be inserted into a message as follows:
- Open a chat with the desired interlocutor;
- Enter the required message text;
- On the left side of the field you will find a smiling face. Click on it with your mouse. Or press the Tab key on your keyboard;
- A list of available emoticons will open. Choose one or more that suits you best;
- All you have to do is click on the “Send” button and the interlocutor will receive your message at the same second.
How to add emoji from your phone
You won't be able to add an emoticon to your status from your phone using a tooltip. Because it simply is not in the application or in the mobile version of the site. But the method using codes still works flawlessly: you copy the one you need from the plate and paste it into the place where you want to get the image.
As an alternative to codes, you can use emojis available on your smartphone. You can find them on the virtual keyboard. For example, on my Xiaomi, long pressing the semicolon button will display all available emoji.
On the wall
You can post posts with emoticons both on your wall and on your friends’ pages. This will help attract attention and convey an idea to people. VKontakte emoticons are added to the wall according to the following scheme:
- In your profile at the top of the wall, find the inscription “What’s new with you?” On your friend's page, look for "Add entry" in the same place. Click on this inscription;
- Enter any text in the field that appears, attach a video or picture. On the right side you will see a smiling face. Click on it with your mouse. The same operation can be done by simply pressing the Tab key on the keyboard;
- A menu will open with a list of all available emoticons. Select those that best complement your entry;
- Click on the “Submit” button and the entry will appear in your feed immediately.
Using the wall, you can share your thoughts and congratulate your friends on the holidays. And emoticons will make your message interesting and memorable.
Kaomoji - status in Japanese symbols
If you prefer not to be full of bright emoticons, but still want to diversify your status on a social network, you should try Kaomoji. These are Japanese analogues of the emoticons we are used to. The Japanese have gone much further in the art of conveying emotions through typographic symbols, and a beginner will most likely have a rather difficult time understanding the meaning of kaomoji at first.
Making an inscription in the Kaomoji style on your own will be extremely difficult, because many of the necessary symbols are simply not available in Slavic languages. The most convenient way is to copy a ready-made drawing from those presented in the lists on thematic sites like the English-language dongerlist.com or the Russian-language kaomoji.ru.
How to draw with emoticons
If you wish, you can make an entire collage or drawing using emoji. There is a special service for this – emoji.ink. It works the same way as a regular graphics editor, but instead of standard and familiar brushes, emoji are used.
The resulting drawing can be saved to your computer and added to VK as a photo. Of course, you won’t be able to put a picture in the status, but it can be used in messages, posts, albums and other places where you can add photos.
How to change your own name in VK
VKontakte, like any other services on the Internet, welcomes the user’s real first and last name. This makes it possible to identify a person by his friends and acquaintances. Using a search, it is much easier to find a person if the personal data in the profile is real. There is another advantage to this - if you lose access to your VK page, it will be easy to restore it. To do this, you need to provide a scan of documents confirming your identity.
Even if you change your first or last name, you can change it in your profile. Also providing a copy of the new documents. These rules have been around for a long time, and they remain the same today in 2021.
If you want to not only add an emoticon, but also change the name in your VKontakte profile to your real one, follow the following instructions.
- Go to your VKontakte page;
- Under the page avatar, click on the “Edit” button;
- In the form, instead of the current first and last name, write down the ones you want to change to;
- At the bottom, click on the “Save” button.
If you specify an existing name (for example, Alexander, Alexey, Yuri), the system may install it immediately. And you don’t have to wait for manual verification by VKontakte moderators. If you indicate an unusual, rare name, you will most likely have to wait until it is considered.
