Despite the total computer advancement of young Internet users, many myths still hover around IP. For example, that an IP address allows you to calculate the person who is hiding behind it. Or that he is a user's personal identifier on the World Wide Web. How else can we explain the persistent desire of some comrades to find out the IP address of someone else's computer?

Everyone has their own reasons, but we’ll talk about what information can be collected about a person using a known IP and how to get the coveted numbers through legal means.

Why does knowing an IP address allow one to calculate a person's location?

In such a situation, such a concept as an IP address will help us out. Absolutely every Internet user, or more precisely, his device, has such an address. The ISP automatically issues an IP address to every device connected to the Internet. Its peculiarity is that by a combination of numbers you can determine where this device is located, down to the country and city. You can also find out the name of the provider and time zone. That's why, if you find out someone else's IP address, you can find out his location.

You can check this on the website whoer.net through the WHOIS section. You just need to enter the data you are looking for and click on the “Check” button.

The location of the device from which a person accessed the Internet is shown under the IP. In the above case, Whoer.net recognized the real location in the city of Moscow.

IPLogger

Another site that offers IP tracking services. For it to work, you need a link to any resource so that the service can shorten it. After this, you need to send the link to the right person and wait for him to click on it. It is best to send such traps on VKontakte or Odnoklassniki, and not by email, since many users do not check their email at all.

Sending a link via Skype is also relevant. If the user is online and you are added to his friends list, then simply write an interesting text and disguise a link that is interesting to the person. This way the user won't suspect anything. Let's consider the procedure for creating such a link in more detail:

A window will appear on the screen with several important links. Under the number 1 is a code for further viewing of conversion statistics from the main page of the site. Below the number 2 is a link for the same purpose. Under the number 3 is the address that needs to be sent to another user. To prevent the link from looking so suspicious, it is best to copy the short address from Google (4).

After a person goes to the address, you will see a description of his IP in the “Visit Statistics” tab.

The 2ip Spy service also has a similar feature, but to use it you need to register by invitation. The disadvantage of such methods is that it is not 100 percent. Your interlocutor may simply not follow the received URL due to suspicion or lack of interest. For the fake link option to work, you need to select material, an article, or a video that is interesting to the person.

How to find out someone else's IP address of a social network (VK, Odnoklassniki or Facebook)?

Unfortunately, the functionality of social networks does not allow you to directly calculate someone else’s IP. This would require hacking into this user's account, which is not entirely legal and could lead to very unpleasant consequences. Therefore, we will not provide such instructions here. You can try asking the resource administration for the address, but usually such data is not disclosed unless you are a representative of law enforcement agencies.

Also, do not forget that the IP address you received after a long search may belong to some anonymizer or VPN service.

How to calculate or track a person using VKontakte IP - social engineering

Method one

There is a completely legal way to find out someone else's IP address of a social network user without breaking any rules. This method is to ask him to send you an email to the address you provided. For example, you can say that you liked some photo on his profile (on the wall) and you want to download it, but you don’t know how to do it. Act like a “dummy” and say that you can only download files by email. You can think of some other way to receive an email from the subject you are looking for. Get creative!

If you succeed, it's done. Now you just need to look into the service data of the sent letter. This can be done in any email program, both online and offline. Here's how to do it, say, using the Yandex.Mail service. Open the received letter, and under the sender's address you will see a link “Email Properties”. Click on it and you will see a variety of service information. It starts with the following lines:

Here you need the sequence of numbers at the very end of the fourth line: 61.129.3.123. This will be the IP address of the person who sent you the letter. As you can see, nothing complicated!

Method two

Also, to find out the IP address of the device, you can force the user to follow a link created using a service for collecting IP addresses, for example, IP Logger. To create a link on the IP Logger website, in the “Link/Picture” block, insert any link, in our case it is yandex.ru, and click “Get logger code”.

Save your logger ID in the system to view statistics.

Now all that remains is to send the person whose IP address you want to find out a message with a link from the “Your link to collect IP addresses” field and force him to follow the link. To make the link less suspicious, copy the short link from Google.

When the user follows the link, he will end up on the page whose address you specified on the main page of the IP Logger, in our case yandex.ru, and you will see the collected IP addresses in the statistics on the site based on the ID of this logger.

What to do next after you find out someone else's IP address of a social network?

To determine the device's location by IP address, use any IP location service, for example. Go to the Whois section, enter the received IP, now you know the location of the device, time zone, operating system used.

Most likely, you have already received messages with links and intriguing content, and when you click on the link, a picture or some site opens, and you do not understand the purpose for which this message was sent to you. So, when you click on such a link, your IP address becomes known to the sender of the message and can be used for fraudulent activities.

Grabify

Another similar service for tracking IP addresses by clicked links. You go to the grabify.link and insert an arbitrary link into the “Enter a Value URL or Tracking code...” , click “Create URL” and confirm the action by clicking the “I Agree Create URL” .

You may also be asked to enter a captcha so that the service can make sure that you are not a robot. Here you also need data from two fields:

New URL - a short link to send to the tracked user.
Access Link - a link with an ID where you can view the received data.

Being sure that the user who received the link has viewed the material sent to him, we follow the Access Link and study the detailed report containing data such as IP and device, IPS (if available). Both services are free for non-commercial use, do not require mandatory registration, and instead of a regular link to a web page, you can use a link to an image, text or even an executable file.

How to hide your IP address?
